John Dyer

John’s involvement with learning and development began 1981 when he was appointed as a management trainer by the Department of Employment and culminated some 14 years later with him being the principal consultant at the Employment Service National Training Centre. During his time at the centre, John delivered training in a wide variety of subject areas. However, he became known for his work in the emerging area of equality and diversity as a trainer, consultant, adviser and practitioner.
He became a senior adviser with the Race Relations Employment Advisory Service. As part of the Department of Employment, the remit was to help employers to develop and implement equal diversity policies and procedures. This involved helping them to write their policies, undertake HR audits, identify training needs and implement diversity delivery plans.
This experience led to John being called upon to support both Departmental and Civil Service-wide equality projects. He was the chair of the Cabinet Office Equal Opportunities Trainers’ Network, a guest consultant at the Civil Service College, an advisor to the Senior Civil Servants’ Positive Action Committee and provided advice on the formulation of the 5-year development plans for women, ethnic minorities and staff with disabilities within the Civil Service.
Since leaving the Civil Service in 1997 John has worked across both the private and public sectors with organizations such as: ITV, Astra Zeneca, Syngenta, Marks and Spencers, RBS, HSBC, The Arts Council, The Prince’s Trust, nine fire brigades, several local authorities, colleges and universities, housing associations and charities.
John, amongst others, recently received an award from the Professional and Executive Network, for being a positive role model for aspiring ethnic minority business people.
